The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of Nigeria has refuted reports claiming that former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development, Sadiya Umar-Farouq, declined an invitation from the agency.
In a clarification, the EFCC spokesperson, Mr. Oyewale Oladele, stated that Mrs. Farouk did not refuse the invitation but instead sent her legal representatives to deliver a letter to the commission, explaining her indisposition. He emphasized that she requested additional time and assured that the commission insisted she present herself without further delay.
It is worth noting that the former minister was summoned to appear before EFCC investigators at their headquarters in Jabi, Abuja, on January 3, 2024, at 10:00 am. The purpose was to provide an account of an alleged fraud during her tenure, involving the sum of N37.1 billion purportedly laundered through a contractor named James Okwete. Umar-Farouk served as a minister under former President Muhammadu Buhari from August 2019 to May 2023.
