Presidential Spokesperson Refutes Atiku’s Call for President Tinubu’s Resignation

In response to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s statement urging President Bola Tinubu to resign amid the escalating security challenges in Nigeria, the Presidency dismissed the comments as “reckless.” The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, labeled Atiku’s allegations as baseless, asserting that Tinubu is actively addressing the nation’s security concerns.

Contrary to Atiku’s claims about the President’s alleged inaction on economic and security challenges, the Presidency insisted that Tinubu is effectively managing the security situation in Nigeria. Onanuga accused Atiku of engaging in “cheap politics” and criticized him for making unfounded allegations.

The Presidency highlighted President Tinubu’s proactive approach to governance, emphasizing that he maintains constant communication with officials and security chiefs. It revealed that Tinubu, during a private visit to France, stayed engaged with developments in Nigeria and is actively involved in efforts to address security issues.

Addressing recent security incidents, the Presidency noted Tinubu’s directives to security agencies to combat criminal activities, particularly in response to the murders of two monarchs in Ekiti State and the kidnapping of students. It also highlighted the President’s approval of funds for security operations, including a special fund of N50 billion to address security challenges in the North East.

The statement from the Presidency challenged Atiku to recognize Tinubu’s commitment to national security and emphasized ongoing efforts by security agencies to control the situation. The Presidency concluded by suggesting that Atiku’s criticisms might stem from lingering disappointment over his electoral defeat in the 2023 presidential poll, where Tinubu emerged victorious.
