Algeria Turns to Vladimir Petkovic, Ends Negotiations with Jose Peseiro for National Football Team Coach Role

Algeria’s Football Association has decided to halt discussions with Jose Peseiro and is on the verge of naming Vladimir Petkovic as the new coach for their men’s senior national team, sources confirm.

The imminent appointment of Petkovic signals the conclusion of speculations surrounding Peseiro’s potential candidacy.

Following Djamel Belmadi’s departure post the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Algeria sought a replacement, initially considering Peseiro due to his commendable stint with Nigeria, guiding the Super Eagles to a second-place finish in the tournament.

Despite Algeria’s AFCON victory in 2019, their recent performance has been lackluster, failing to advance past the group stage in the 2021 and 2023 editions, with no wins in their last six games.

After Belmadi’s dismissal post-AFCON in Ivory Coast, Peseiro emerged as a frontrunner, alluring the Algerian football federation president, Walid Sadi, with his credentials. Peseiro was reportedly offered a lucrative $90,000 monthly salary to helm the team.

However, recent developments suggest that negotiations with Peseiro have ceased, paving the way for Petkovic’s appointment.

While Peseiro’s future remains uncertain as his contract with the NFF expired after the AFCON, speculation suggests he may continue with Nigeria, given Algeria’s focus on Petkovic.

In the midst of this, William Troost-Ekong expressed support for Peseiro’s potential return, highlighting the players’ satisfaction with his leadership and the potential to build on their recent success.

With Algeria out of contention, Peseiro’s options are limited, and given his familiarity with the Eagles over the past two years, accepting the role could be a viable choice for him.
