CJN Urges West African Leaders to Prioritize Justice and Equity for Regional Prosperity

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Olukayode Ariwoola, emphasized the importance of justice and equity in fostering regional prosperity during the opening of the Statutory ECOWAS Judicial Council meeting in Abuja.

Justice Ariwoola called upon leaders in West Africa to uphold the principles of justice, equity, and solidarity to address the economic, political, and leadership challenges facing the region.

He highlighted the vital role of the ECOWAS Judicial Council (EJC) in maintaining the rule of law, protecting human rights, and resolving disputes among member states peacefully.

While acknowledging the diverse legal systems within the region, Justice Ariwoola stressed the need for harmonization to promote regional integration and cooperation.

Despite facing challenges such as inadequate funding and capacity constraints, he expressed optimism in overcoming obstacles through innovation and collaboration.

The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, urged the ECOWAS Court of Justice to consider member states’ peculiarities and enhance alternative dispute resolution mechanisms.

Fagbemi emphasized the importance of recruiting jurists with extensive experience and expertise to strengthen the ECOWAS Court’s jurisdiction and ensure effective justice delivery.

Echoing these sentiments, President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Touray, highlighted the judiciary’s crucial role in curbing instability and insecurity in the region.

He emphasized the Community Court of Justice’s significance as a reference point for legal matters and stressed the importance of addressing issues affecting its effective operation during the ECOWAS Judicial Council’s regular sessions.
