Bonfrere Jo Endorses Emmanuel Amuneke for Super Eagles Coaching Role

Former Super Eagles Manager Bonfrere Jo has thrown his support behind ex-winger Emmanuel Amuneke to take over as the coach of Nigeria’s senior national team, the Super Eagles. Speaking from his base in Holland during a telephone conversation, Jo expressed confidence in Amuneke’s discipline, tactical acumen, and technical competence, suggesting that he would excel as a Technical Adviser working with the Super Eagles.

Following the Nigeria Football Federation’s decision to part ways with Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro, leaving the senior national team without a coach, industry stakeholders have been advocating for the appointment of a top-tier coach. Former Green Eagles winger Segun Odegbami has been vocal in opposing a foreign coach, arguing for the need for a local manager of high standing to lead the Super Eagles.

In alignment with Odegbami’s stance, Bonfrere Jo emphasized Amuneke’s suitability for the role, citing his strong mentality, discipline, and technical prowess. He expressed readiness to provide technical support to Amuneke if called upon by the Federation.

“I’m Dutchgerian. I worked effectively with Nigerian players, achieving significant success for the country. Nigeria needs more progress, and out of all the local players I’ve worked with, I would gladly recommend Emmanuel Amuneke for the job,” Jo stated.

Bonfrere Jo, who led Nigeria to Olympic gold in Atlanta, highlighted Amuneke’s crucial role in the team’s success, including scoring the winning goal against Argentina in the finals. Amuneke, a former Barcelona winger turned coach, has a decorated career both as a player and a coach, having won the World Under-17 Championship with Nigeria in 2015 and qualifying Tanzania for their first-ever African Nations Cup in 2019.

Amidst speculations about the Super Eagles’ next coach, the Nigeria Football Federation has assured stakeholders that they will announce their choice soon, pledging to appoint the best-suited candidate for the job.
