Kano State Police Apprehend 120 Suspected Criminals, Rescue Kidnap Victims in March Crackdown

The Kano State Police, operating in Northwest Nigeria, have announced the successful capture of 120 suspected criminals during the month of March, effectively tackling a spectrum of criminal activities. In a press release issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, it was disclosed that these operations also led to the rescue of three kidnapped individuals.

The apprehended individuals are implicated in a diverse range of alleged crimes, including 15 suspected armed robbers, four individuals associated with kidnapping activities, 10 suspected drug dealers, four suspects involved in motor vehicle theft, three implicated in tricycle theft, eleven motorcycle theft suspects, two suspected fraudsters, and 20 individuals suspected of general theft. Additionally, 55 individuals believed to be involved in thuggery, locally known as ‘Yan-Daba,’ were also detained.

Kiyawa further elaborated on the significant haul of seized items, which includes 15 rounds of AK-47 live ammunition, 12 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition, 24 locally made guns, seven motor vehicles, three tricycles, five motorcycles, 28 knives, 10 cutlasses, seven sharp irons, three parcels, and 56 wraps of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, six sachets, and 24 pieces of Diazepam tablets, 347 pieces of women’s wrappers, a large quantity of vandalized cable wires, 45 sheep, and 15 jerricans of palm oil, among other items, recovered by the police throughout March 2024.

Highlighting the Kano State Police Command’s commitment to combating the resurgence of thuggery and associated violent criminal activities, Kiyawa emphasized the implementation of strategic control initiatives. These initiatives include robust community policing engagements at tactical and operational levels, notably the establishment of additional ‘Anti-Daba’ units at Dorayi flashpoints, as part of efforts to curtail thuggery activities across identified locations in the state, particularly within the Metropolis.
