French Police Fatally Shoot Armed Man Attempting to Attack Rouen Synagogue

French police have shot and killed an armed man who attempted to set fire to a synagogue in the north-western city of Rouen, according to France’s Interior Minister, Gérald Darmanin.

The man, armed with a knife and an iron bar, advanced towards police officers, prompting them to open fire, local reports indicated.

Rouen Mayor Nicolas Mayer-Rossignaol stated that the attack on the synagogue impacted not just the Jewish community but the entire city, leaving residents “battered and in shock.”

Police were alerted around 06:45 (05:45 GMT) when smoke was observed rising from the synagogue. Upon arrival at the scene, an officer shot the armed man.

Mayor Mayer-Rossignaol reported that firefighters were on site working to control the fire at the synagogue. “There appeared to be no victims other than the armed man,” he added.

Interior Minister Darmanin commended the police for their “responsiveness and courage” in handling the situation.
