Nigerian Stars Olajide Omotayo and Offiong Edem to Shine at 2024 WTT Contender Lagos

Lagos, Nigeria (June 21, 2024) – As the 2024 WTT Contender Lagos kicks off at the prestigious Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall in the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Paris-bound stars Olajide Omotayo and Offiong Edem will headline the Nigerian team in the singles events. This elite tournament serves as a key platform for top table tennis talent from around the globe.

In the Men’s Singles category, 2019 African Games champion Olajide Omotayo leads a robust Nigerian contingent of seven players aiming to advance to the second round. Omotayo is set to face India’s Manav Thakkar in a highly anticipated match. Joining him, rising junior star Matthew Kuti will challenge French player Thibault Poret, while Nigerian players Azeez Solanke, Mustapha Mustapha, and Abdulbasit Abdulfatai prepare for tough encounters against competitors from China and India.

Adding an interesting twist to the Men’s Singles, Nigerian brothers Amadi Omeh and Muiz Adegoke are scheduled to compete against each other in the opening round, promising an exciting familial showdown.

In the Women’s Singles, Offiong Edem, a key figure in Nigerian table tennis, is matched up against her fellow countrywoman Fatimo Bello in the first round. Edem’s performance is keenly anticipated as she seeks to make a significant impact on her path to the Paris Olympics.

Defending champion Shin Yubin from South Korea starts her title defense against India’s Archana Kamath. The competition also features a thrilling match-up with 2024 Africa Cup champion Dina Meshref of Egypt going head-to-head with Chinese teenager Xu Huiyao.
