Nollywood Mourns as Veteran Actor Amaechi Muonago is Laid to Rest in Anambra

Amaechi Muonago, the esteemed Nollywood actor, was laid to rest in his hometown of Ugamuma village, Obosi, in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, amid tears and tributes from family, friends, and members of the Nollywood community. The burial ceremony commenced with a service of songs at his residence on Thursday, June 20, 2024, followed by his interment on Friday, after his body was released from the Crown Hospital Mortuary.

The funeral was attended by prominent figures including former Governor of Anambra State and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and the Anambra State Commissioner for Culture, Tourism, and Entertainment, Dom Onyenji. State and national executives of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) also joined the mourners to pay their last respects to the beloved actor.

Peter Obi, in his tribute, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the Nollywood icon and offered prayers for the family, urging them to find solace in their faith during this difficult time. He prayed for the peaceful repose of Muonago’s soul, reflecting on the impact of his loss.

Commissioner Onyenji highlighted Muonago’s significant contributions to the Nollywood industry, emphasizing the importance of creativity and dedication in the field of film. “This is an industry for those who are creative, everyone should try to work hard to promote the ideal in the film industry. We as government are here to also mourn the Nollywood legend who has played his role and brought up scores in the industry,” Onyenji remarked.

Chief Emeka Rollas, the National President of AGN, represented by veteran actor Chief Steve Eboh, also offered words of comfort to the bereaved family. He assured them of God’s mercy and fortitude to cope with their loss, noting Muonago’s lasting influence on the industry and his mentorship of many upcoming actors.

The state chairman of AGN, Mrs. Anyaegbunam Chinyere Esther, spoke of Muonago’s legacy as a father figure within Nollywood. “We lost somebody who was very precious to us, somebody people look up to as a father in the industry. He mentored so many of us. We urge the bereaved family of the deceased to take heart and God in His infinite mercy will grant them the heart with which to bear the irreparable loss,” she said.

Among the notable attendees at the burial were National Vice President South-East, Anigbo Clement (known as AB Cowboy), Uwaezeoke, and Bob Manuel Udokwu from Ogidi, along with other Nollywood personalities and community members.

A thanksgiving service in honor of Muonago will be held at St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Ugamuma Obosi, on Sunday, June 23, 2024.

Amaechi Muonago, who passed away on Sunday, March 24, 2024, at the age of 67, had battled kidney-related issues, diabetes, and stroke. He was celebrated for his exceptional ability to bring characters to life in both comedic and epic roles, leaving an indelible mark on the Nigerian film industry.
