A human rights advocacy group has urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to take immediate legal action against an Abuja-based realtor, Rebecca Godwin-Isaac, also known as Bilikisu Ishaku Aliyu, accused of abusing Nigeria’s national currency.

The group, Initiative Against Human Rights Abuse and Torture (INAHURAT), revealed it first filed a petition on July 21, 2025, calling for an investigation into viral videos allegedly showing the realtor spraying and trampling on naira notes during social events in Edo and Anambra States.

According to the petition, such actions clearly violate Section 21(1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, 2007, which prohibits any form of abuse of the naira.

In a follow-up letter dated September 18, 2025, INAHURAT’s National Coordinator, Comrade Gerald Katchy, expressed frustration that the EFCC had not yet taken visible steps to prosecute the case despite what the group described as “overwhelming evidence.”

“The Commission cannot claim to fight corruption while turning a blind eye to such open violations of the law,” the statement read. The group further warned that if the EFCC failed to act within one month, it would approach the courts with a writ of mandamus to compel prosecution.

Analysts note that the case is drawing public attention because of its implications for equal enforcement of the law. In the past, similar incidents of naira abuse have attracted swift arrests and prosecutions, sparking questions about whether some individuals are being shielded from accountability.

The EFCC has not yet issued an official response to INAHURAT’s petition.
