The United States has reiterated its commitment to place visa restrictions on Nigerians found guilty of corruption and election misconduct.
The announcement was made on Monday by the US Mission in Nigeria via its official account on X (formerly Twitter), where it declared:
“We stand firm against corruption. US visa restrictions may affect Nigerians who undermine democracy or engage in corrupt practices. Fighting corruption knows no borders or limits on accountability.”
The statement underscores Washington’s ongoing support for good governance, accountability, and democratic values in Nigeria.
This is not the first time the US has taken such action. Ahead of and after Nigeria’s 2023 general elections, visa bans were imposed on politicians and individuals accused of rigging, election violence, or misconduct.
Reports by the ICIR confirm that the US has issued multiple visa bans on Nigerians in recent years as part of its global anti-corruption efforts.
