The Kano State Police Command has arrested a 33-year-old man, Nasiru Shitu, for impersonating a police officer and extorting unsuspecting members of the public.
Shitu was apprehended on Sunday evening at Kofar Dawanau, an area notorious for fake officers harassing residents. He was dressed in clothing resembling a police uniform at the time of his arrest.
According to Police Public Relations Officer SP Abdullahi Haruna, investigations confirmed that Shitu is neither a serving officer nor a member of the Police Special Constabulary, but had been posing as one to demand money from civilians.
Police say the arrest followed multiple complaints from residents about extortion in the area. Further investigations are ongoing to uncover the extent of his activities and whether he had accomplices.
The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, has urged residents with useful information to contact the command through its emergency line.
