With the 2027 governorship election on the horizon, fresh pressure is mounting within Lagos State’s political space as civic groups and stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) rally behind former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to reclaim the party’s ticket.

Supporters argue that Ambode deserves a second chance, pointing to what they describe as a transformative first term that saw notable investments in infrastructure, youth empowerment, and traffic management.

The Lagos Residents Association (LRA), led by Dr. Olumuyiwa Adesanmi, is at the forefront of the campaign. “Ambode lost the APC nomination in 2019 under questionable circumstances. Many Lagosians believe he governed well and deserves a fresh mandate,” Adesanmi said in a statement.

Endorsements have also come from religious groups and Christian associations, which praised Ambode’s record in expanding urban and suburban infrastructure, road networks, and skill development initiatives for young people.

Although Ambode has not officially declared his candidacy, he has dismissed rumors of defecting from the APC, stressing his loyalty to the party. His loyalists, however, are already mobilizing support, with some pledging to purchase his nomination and expression of interest forms when the time comes.

Observers say the growing calls for Ambode’s return could reshape the APC succession race in Lagos, setting the stage for one of the most closely watched contests in the lead-up to 2027.
