Nigeria has successfully retained its seat on the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), with Engr. Mahmoud Ben Tukur emerging as one of the top winners in the re-election held at the 42nd ICAO Assembly in Montreal, Canada.
Ben Tukur secured 163 out of 185 votes, defeating 11 other African contenders to reaffirm Nigeria’s strong voice in shaping global aviation policies.
Leading the delegation, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, described the outcome as a proud moment for both Nigeria and Africa. “This victory is not just for Nigeria but for Africa. It affirms our commitment to global aviation safety, security, and sustainable growth,” he said.
Aviation experts agree the result reflects Nigeria’s growing credibility. Former ICAO Council President Dr. Olumuyiwa Benard Aliu noted it was proof that Nigeria’s contributions in safety oversight and capacity building are recognized globally. Nairobi-based analyst Grace Baraka added that the win signals investor confidence in Nigeria’s aviation reforms and regulatory predictability.
Nigeria’s re-election comes on the back of recent milestones, including hosting the BAGASOO Regional Safety Oversight Organisation, supporting the BAGAIA Accident Investigation Agency, and aligning with international climate standards through CORSIA carbon reduction initiatives.
Analysts say the victory could boost Nigeria’s access to collaboration, technical support, and funding, but also comes with a renewed responsibility to improve infrastructure, safety standards, and compliance with international benchmarks.
