Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has set a new milestone in the UEFA Champions League, becoming Nigeria’s all-time top scorer in the competition after netting his 10th goal on Tuesday, September 30, 2025.

The 26-year-old forward, who recently returned from an ankle injury sustained during Nigeria’s World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa, made his first full start for Galatasaray under manager Okan Buruk.

Osimhen scored the decisive goal in the 16th minute, calmly converting a penalty after teammate Barış Alper Yılmaz was fouled by Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai. He sent goalkeeper Alisson Becker the wrong way to secure Galatasaray’s first home victory in the Champions League in seven years.

The game saw further drama as Liverpool lost Alisson to injury, forcing an early substitution. Later, the visitors appeared to have won a penalty, but the decision was overturned following a VAR review.

The historic strike not only handed Galatasaray a famous win but also confirmed Osimhen’s place in Nigerian football history, surpassing previous national records in Europe’s elite competition.
