Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has announced the commencement of annual sporting tournaments aimed at enhancing sports development across the state. The governor made this declaration during the official presentation of trophies and medals from various teams at the Government House in Port Harcourt.

The teams honored included Rivers United Under-17 Youth League, Rivers Hoopers Basketball Club, Rivers Angels Football Club, Rivers Table Tennis Team, as well as teams in Judo, Chess, Volleyball, Para sports, and Hockey.

Governor Fubara emphasized his administration's commitment to providing platforms for youth to develop their talents and achieve their aspirations. He directed the Commissioner for Sports, Christopher Green, to outline the structure of the competition and collaborate closely with his office to ensure its successful implementation.

Highlighting the significance of sports in youth empowerment, Governor Fubara pledged to celebrate outstanding performers at an awards ceremony in December. He expressed pride in the trophies presented by the teams, humorously referring to himself as the "luckiest governor of Rivers."

Governor Fubara stressed the importance of investing state resources in enhancing public welfare and youth development rather than allowing them to engage in activities that could lead to social unrest.

In recognition of their achievements, cash prizes ranging from N2.5 million to N30 million were announced for individual and team winners. The Governor commended the Sports Commissioner and all stakeholders for their dedication in bringing pride to Rivers State through sports.

Christopher Green, the Rivers State Commissioner for Sports, acknowledged the tough competition faced by the teams but credited their success to the governor's unwavering support and the determination of the players. He highlighted the teams' achievements in winning gold, silver, and bronze medals across various male and female categories, noting new records set in Open Chess by Team Rivers.

Adokiye Amiesimaka, Chairman of the Governing Council of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, praised the governor's support for the teams, describing the celebration as a profound milestone in Nigeria's sporting history. He encouraged the players to strive for continued excellence in their respective sports.

The launch of annual sporting tournaments in Rivers State marks a significant step towards nurturing talent, promoting sportsmanship, and fostering community pride through athletics.
