Quest FM TV News, Abuja – In a dramatic political turn, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has resigned his membership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), citing irreconcilable differences and a deviation from the party’s founding principles.

Atiku made his resignation public through a letter dated July 14, 2025, addressed to the Chairman of the PDP, Jada 1 Ward, in Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

“As a founding father of this esteemed Party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision,” Atiku stated in the letter. “However, I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the Party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for.”

He expressed deep gratitude to the party for the roles it allowed him to play, including serving as Vice President of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007 and being the PDP’s presidential candidate in both the 2019 and 2023 general elections.

Atiku, a towering figure in Nigerian politics and a consistent voice within the PDP for over two decades, lamented the direction the party has taken, saying it no longer aligns with the values it was founded upon.

“It is with a heavy heart that I resign, recognizing the irreconcilable differences that have emerged. I wish the Party and its leadership all the best in the future.”

Atiku’s exit marks a significant shift in Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly as preparations begin to take shape for the 2027 general elections. His departure leaves a vacuum in the PDP’s leadership and could potentially trigger realignments within the opposition camp.

Though he has not yet disclosed his next political move, analysts believe that Atiku’s departure may pave the way for the formation of a new political coalition or his alignment with another party, as he has done in previous political cycles.

This development comes at a time of internal tension and strategic uncertainty within the PDP, with many party loyalists already expressing concern over the party’s future without one of its most prominent founding members.
