Quest FM TV News â Manchester UnitedâÂÂs nightmare start to the season worsened on Wednesday night as they crashed out of the Carabao Cup, suffering a shocking defeat to League Two side Grimsby Town in the second round.
The match, which ended in heartbreak for United fans, saw the Red Devils eliminated after a dramatic penalty miss from Bryan Mbuemo in the twelfth round of the shootout. Despite boasting new signings and high expectations under manager Ruben Amorim, the club remains winless since the campaign began, raising serious concerns about their trajectory.
Speaking after the upset, Amorim admitted his disappointment and placed full responsibility on the teamâÂÂs lackluster performance. âÂÂI think the team and the players spoke really loud⦠we lost, the best team won,â he told Sky Sports.
When pressed on why United looked so exposed in the first half, Amorim conceded: âÂÂâ¦not just the space, the way we started the game without any intensity⦠we were completely lost and itâÂÂs hard to explain. ThatâÂÂs why I think they spoke really loud.âÂÂ
The Portuguese coach offered a heartfelt apology to the fans, acknowledging their unwavering loyalty despite the string of poor results. âÂÂI just want to say IâÂÂm really sorry to the fans. The support they give me, the support that they are always with, even in all the defeats⦠today I have nothing to say apart from sorry,â Amorim said.
Making his season debut, goalkeeper Andre Onana came under heavy criticism for both of GrimsbyâÂÂs goals. In the 22nd minute, he allowed Charles VernamâÂÂs low drive to beat him at the near post, before a mistimed punch just eight minutes later gifted Tyrell Warren a simple tap-in.
However, Amorim refused to pin the defeat solely on his goalkeeper. âÂÂWith all due respect, when you play against a fourth division team, itâÂÂs not the goalkeeper, itâÂÂs everything,â he emphasized.
The loss has fueled mounting pressure on UnitedâÂÂs manager and squad, as doubts grow over whether drastic changes may be required to salvage the season. For now, the shock exit to a fourth-tier side will go down as one of the most humbling moments in the clubâÂÂs recent history.
