Quest FM TV News – The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced an upward review of the cost of obtaining the Nigerian Standard Passport, with the new pricing structure set to take effect from September 1, 2025.
In a statement issued by the Service Public Relations Officer, ACI AS Akinlabi, the NIS clarified that the increment will apply only to passport applications made within Nigeria, while application fees for Nigerians in the diaspora will remain unchanged.
Under the revised fee structure, the 32-page passport with a five-year validity will now cost ₦100,000, while the 64-page passport with a ten-year validity will cost ₦200,000. For Nigerians abroad, however, the fees are unchanged at $150 for the 32-page, five-year booklet and $230 for the 64-page, ten-year booklet.
According to the Service, the adjustment was introduced to preserve the quality and integrity of the Nigerian passport while ensuring continued accessibility for citizens.
This latest development comes barely a year after the Federal Government approved an earlier price adjustment in August 2024, which came into effect on September 1, 2024. At the time, the cost of the 32-page, five-year passport was raised from ₦35,000 to ₦50,000, while the 64-page, ten-year booklet increased from ₦70,000 to ₦100,000.
Explaining the rationale behind the latest hike, the Immigration Service said the increment was necessary to sustain production standards, maintain global competitiveness, and enhance overall service delivery to Nigerians at home and abroad.
While the announcement has sparked mixed reactions among citizens, the NIS maintains that the new rates reflect the operational realities of producing secure travel documents and are aimed at ensuring Nigerians continue to carry passports that meet international standards.
