Colombian football has been thrown into controversy following a shocking incident in which Real Alianza Cataquera player Javier Bolivar struck referee Vanessa Ceballos during a tense midweek fixture against Deportivo Quique.
The altercation unfolded when Bolivar, who was already off the pitch, was shown a red card by Ceballos. Witnesses reported that before the official could even raise the card fully, the midfielder confronted her in protest. In a moment that stunned fans and players alike, Bolivar turned abruptly and slapped Ceballos across the face with his right hand.
The referee, visibly shaken but resolute, attempted to retaliate with a kick before being restrained by other players. Tempers flared as teammates and opponents rushed to intervene. One goalkeeper quickly stepped in, pushing Bolivar away from the referee as outrage spread across the field.
Video footage of the confrontation surfaced online within hours, igniting widespread condemnation both in Colombia and abroad. Fans, football analysts, and gender equality advocates have described the assault as disgraceful, with many calling for swift and severe disciplinary action from the country’s football authorities.
Under growing pressure, Bolivar took to Instagram to issue a public apology. He described his behavior as “disrespectful and inappropriate,” while attempting to downplay the intention behind his actions. “I want to make it absolutely clear that at no time was there any physical aggression toward the referee,” he wrote. “I was trying to grab the whistle from her mouth, but I understand my gesture was offensive and portrayed her as contrary to the values of football and respect. Therefore, I humbly apologize to her, her family, the women, and everyone who was affected by what happened.”
Bolivar further emphasized his rejection of violence, particularly against women. “Women deserve all our respect, care, and admiration,” he stated. “My commitment is to work on my personal and athletic growth so as to never again repeat an act that violates anyone’s dignity.”
Despite the apology, public anger remains strong, with many questioning whether Bolivar’s explanation truly reflects the severity of his actions. Colombian football’s disciplinary committee is now reviewing the incident, with reports suggesting the midfielder could face a lengthy suspension or even an extended ban from the professional game.
As the football community awaits an official verdict, the case has once again sparked conversations about respect, professionalism, and the protection of referees—particularly women—in sports arenas often dominated by male aggression.
