Team Lagos have written their names in the history books after emerging champions of the female football event at the ongoing 9th National Youth Games (NYG) in Asaba, Delta State.

The much-anticipated final lived up to expectations, with both sides displaying grit and determination before the match was decided through penalties. For Team Lagos, the triumph was the fulfillment of a long-standing dream.

Speaking with excitement after the game, team captain Rogert described the moment as a milestone for herself and her teammates. “We’ve been coming to Delta with the hope of winning gold in female football at the NYG, and finally achieving it feels bigger than victory itself for me and my teammates,” she said.

In contrast, it was heartbreak for the host side, Team Delta, whose captain Anastasia could not hold back tears. She admitted that defensive lapses cost her team dearly, but chose to remain thankful. “Our loss came from some costly defensive errors, but I still return all glory to God,” she said.

Despite the setback in football, Delta State found reason to celebrate on the judo mat. In the girls’ 40kg category, Precious Daniel delivered a stellar performance to clinch gold for the state. Blessing Chukwuengozi of Abia State settled for silver, while Annabel Iyalekhue of Edo State and Mayor Izibeklen of Bayelsa State shared bronze honors.

The victories and near misses underline the intensity and excitement that continue to define the National Youth Games, which has become a vital platform for discovering and nurturing Nigeria’s next generation of sports stars.
