Bishop Mathew Hassan Kukah of the Sokoto Diocese has advised former President Goodluck Jonathan to tread carefully if he decides to contest the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking at the Democracy Dialogue of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, Kukah praised Jonathan’s statesmanship in 2015 when he conceded defeat, describing it as “an act of honour and a landmark moment for Nigeria’s democracy.”

However, the cleric cautioned the former president against being swayed by self-serving interests. Quoting General Theophilus Danjuma, Kukah said: “The voice of the devil is not so far from the voice of God. Listen very carefully to those who want to use you as an instrument for the elongation of their interests, and not your interests or the interests of Nigeria.”

He urged Jonathan to reflect deeply, seek divine guidance, and allow conscience and national interest to shape his decision, rather than political opportunists.

Jonathan’s potential return to frontline politics in 2027 has sparked debates across the country, but Kukah stressed that the ultimate choice rests solely with the former president.
