The Lagos State Police Command says it has restored peace and order to Tejuosho Market Phase II, Surulere, following violent disturbances allegedly caused by hoodlums who disguised their actions as a protest against a power outage.
According to police authorities, the unrest, which occurred on Thursday, saw the hoodlums vandalise parts of a commercial bank within the market and launch attacks on policemen stationed in the area.
In its report, the Command disclosed that operatives from the Police Mobile Force (PMF) successfully repelled the attackers, preventing them from gaining access to the bank and the market’s police post. Officers on the ground were said to have displayed “a high level of restraint” despite facing provocation from the miscreants.
A statement signed by Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Babasuyi B. Oluseyi, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, confirmed that 18 suspects were arrested at the scene.
“On 18th September 2025, at about 2:30 pm, the Command received a distress call that hoodlums and miscreants had begun attacking people, damaging goods and properties in Tejuosho Market. Further information revealed that the hoodlums also attacked Mobile Policemen guarding a commercial bank. The officers acted swiftly, contained the situation, and denied the hoodlums access to the bank and the Market Police Post,” the statement said.
The police commissioner immediately deployed additional reinforcements, including conventional officers and tactical squads, to restore calm. Business activities have since resumed at the market.
Oluseyi further assured that investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend more perpetrators involved in the unrest. He quoted CP Jimoh as warning that future attacks on security personnel or destruction of property would not be tolerated, stressing that those arrested will face prosecution once investigations are concluded.
The Command urged traders and residents to go about their businesses without fear and advised members of the public to channel complaints through the nearest police station or via its emergency hotlines: 07061019374, 08065154338, 08063299264, 08039344870.
