President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday, September 26, 2025, departed Abuja for Ibadan, Oyo State, to attend the historic coronation of the new Olubadan of Ibadanland, Senator Rashidi Ladoja.
The presidential jet took off from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, in the morning, carrying the President to the ancient city, where he is expected to join eminent personalities, top government officials, and traditional rulers at the official installation ceremony. The grand occasion is being held at the iconic Mapo Hall, a landmark venue deeply tied to Ibadan’s cultural and political history.
The event underscores the national and cultural significance of the Olubadan throne, which remains one of the most respected and enduring traditional institutions in Nigeria. Ibadan, as the largest city in West Africa by landmass and a major Yoruba power base, places the Olubadan at the heart of cultural heritage and influence across the region.
Ladoja, aged 81, is a revered businessman, politician, and former governor of Oyo State. He also served as a senator before steadily climbing through the unique and respected Olubadan traditional hierarchy, a system that rewards patience and seniority. His ascension as the 44th Olubadan follows the passing of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin on July 7, 2025.
The coronation is not only a celebration for Ibadan people but also a reaffirmation of Yoruba traditions that continue to thrive alongside Nigeria’s modern political system.
