Around a dozen soldiers have been arrested in Benin following an attempted coup, including the alleged ringleaders of the foiled operation, military and security sources told AFP on Sunday.

One source reported that 13 arrests had been made, while another confirmed that all detained individuals were active-duty soldiers except one ex-military officer.

The arrests followed an announcement earlier on Sunday, when a group of soldiers declared on state television that they had removed President Patrice Talon from office. The group, identifying themselves as the “Military Committee for Refoundation” (CMR), claimed they had met and agreed on Talon’s removal.

Gunfire Reported Near President’s Residence

The French Embassy stated on X (formerly Twitter) that gunfire was heard at Camp Guezo, located near the president’s official residence in the economic capital. The embassy advised French citizens in Benin to remain indoors for safety.

Government: President Talon Is Safe

Despite the televised announcement, President Talon’s entourage assured the public that he was safe and that the situation was under control.

“This is a small group of people who only control the television. The regular army is regaining control. The city and the country are completely secure,” Talon’s office told AFP.

Talon has been president of Benin for 10 years and is expected to step down in April at the end of his term.
