Tito Jackson, the iconic guitarist and singer known for his role as an original member of the Jackson 5 and as the older brother of Michael and Janet Jackson, has died at the age of 70. His sons, Taj, Taryll, and TJ, who perform as the music group 3T, confirmed the news on Instagram late Sunday.
âÂÂItâÂÂs with heavy hearts that we announce that our beloved father, Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Tito Jackson is no longer with us,â they wrote alongside a photo of themselves with their father. âÂÂWe are shocked, saddened, and heartbroken. Our father was an incredible man who cared about everyone and their well-being.â They also shared a message he often preached: âÂÂLove One Another.âÂÂ
Family friend Steve Manning informed Entertainment Tonight that Tito passed away from an apparent heart attack while driving from New Mexico to his home in Oklahoma.
Recently, Tito had been performing with his brothers Marlon and Jackie as part of The Jacksons, following a series of performances in Germany, England, and California.
Tito Jackson was a founding member of The Jackson 5, alongside brothers Jackie, Jermaine, Marlon, and Michael. The group, which signed with Motown Records in 1969, achieved global success with hits like âÂÂI Want You Back,â âÂÂABC,â and âÂÂIâÂÂll Be There.â Michael Jackson, who achieved solo superstardom, passed away in 2009 at age 50.
Tito and his brothers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997 by Diana Ross. Since 2003, Tito had been active in performing and touring with his own blues and funk band. In 2016, he achieved his last solo Billboard hit with âÂÂGet It Babyâ and released his debut solo album âÂÂTito Time.â His second album, a blues effort titled âÂÂUnder Your Spell,â was released in 2021 and featured collaborations with George Benson, Bobby Rush, and Stevie Wonder.
Tito Jackson is survived by his three sons. His former wife, Dolores, passed away in 1994.
